It Starts With Us.
Awareness is the first step toward action. When we understand the challenges foster youth face, we can begin building real solutions that create lasting impact. Every fact shared is a chance to open eyes, spark compassion, and move one step closer to change.
The Reality We Face.
Across the nation, thousands of foster youth face the same struggle—growing up in a system meant to protect them, yet often aging out without the tools or support to truly succeed. The numbers tell a powerful story—one that demands awareness, empathy, and action.
The Facts
-
More than 390,000 children are currently in foster care in the United States.
-
Each year, approximately 20,000 youth age out of the system when they turn 18—often without family, guidance, or stability.
-
Within 18 months, nearly half of those who age out experience homelessness.
-
Only 50% will find employment by age 24.
-
Less than 3% will earn a college degree.
-
Nearly 25% will become involved with the justice system within two years of leaving care.
These statistics aren’t just numbers—they’re real lives, full of potential, waiting to be seen, supported, and given a fair chance.
Why It Matters
When foster youth age out of the system, they lose not only a home but also the safety net that many of us take for granted. Without mentorship, financial literacy, or emotional guidance, too many young people fall through the cracks—despite their resilience and will to rise.
Our Response
The Austin Hooper Foundation is dedicated to supporting foster youth by advocating for stronger support systems, promoting mental health and well-being, providing scholarships, and creating opportunities to help them confidently transition into adulthood. We believe that by understanding relevant data, we can design solutions that truly make a difference, as awareness is the first step toward change.
